Life and times of an avalanche
The avalanche dynamics in the Bak–Sneppen mechanism of self-organized criticality (SOC) is discussed. Rigorous arguments reveal the emergent history dependence that dominates the intermittent activity. In numerical studies the emergent SOC state shows glassy features, such as aging and an ultrametric organization of activity. c © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
متن کاملExcitability following an avalanche-collapse process
– Excitability and relaxation oscillations are shown to appear in the vicinity of subcritical or transcritical bifurcations with a different scenario from those previously introduced in biology, chemistry and liquid-crystal physics. Experimental observation of such a scenario has been done in a laser with intracavity saturable absorber. Since the work by Hodgkin and Huxley on neurons [1], excit...
متن کاملElectromagnetic radiation field of an electron avalanche
Article history: Received 4 February 2011 Received in revised form 1 June 2011 Accepted 2 June 2011 Electron avalanches are the main constituent of electrical discharges in the atmosphere. However, the electromagnetic radiation field generated by a single electron avalanche growing in different field configurations has not yet been evaluated in the literature. In this paper, the electromagnetic...
متن کاملAccelerating EM: An Empirical Study
Many applications require that we learn the pa rameters of a model from data. EM (E xpectation Maximization) is a method for learning the pa rameters of probabilistic models with missing or hidden data. There are instances in which this method is slow to converge. Therefore, sev eral accelerations have been proposed to improve the method. None of the proposed acceleration methods are theore...
متن کاملAn exactly solvable model of an avalanche-type measuring device
– A quantum many-body model is presented with features similar to those of certain particle detectors. The energy spectrum contains a single, thermodynamically metastable “ready” state and macroscopically-distinct, ground “pointer” states. Transitions into classicallike states can be triggered by a single particle with the help of the thermal bath. Schrödinger cat states are associated with sup...
